Ear Pinning

Candidates

  • Ears that protrude significantly from the head can be improved by ear pinning.
  • Other candidates for ear pinning are individuals who have unusually large or undesirably shaped ears.

Intended Result

  • Ears with normal folds and shape with normal protrusion from the side of the head are achieved through ear pinning.

Procedure

  • On an outpatient basis, the procedure is completed under sedation, and local anesthesia.
  • The ears are usually bandaged with a turban-like dressing that wraps around the head for several days.
  • Initial discomfort is mild and easily controlled with oral medication.
  • The procedure can take place beginning at age 5 and be performed any time thereafter.

Healing Process

  • Within 10 to 20 days, an improved ear appearance is noticeable.
  • To protect the ears, a thin stocking cap or headband is worn over night for 3 weeks after the first dressing is removed.
  • It is recommended ear pinning patients avoid contact sports for a month.

Insurance Guidelines

  • In children or youth cases, insurance frequently pays. Our staff can assist you in making that determination.
