Body Contouring

Liposuction

Candidates

  • Excess subcutaneous fat, which is resistant to diet and exercise, can be removed using liposuction.
  • Individuals who wish to change their body contours may want to consider liposuction.
  • Commonly involved areas are the anterior part of the neck, upper arms and armpits, male chest/breasts, trunk, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, inner knees, and calves.
  • The majority of liposuction patients are average weight and desire permanent contour changes.
  • Since improved techniques are more readily available, liposuction is becoming increasingly useful to heavier persons.

Intended Results

  • A permanent improvement in the contour and proportion of treated areas is achieved with liposuction.
  • With liposuction, a more flattering figure or physique can be accomplished.
  • Clothing can be more fitting.

Procedure Description

  • Liposuction is completed on an outpatient basis.
  • Sedation is typically used for safety and comfort.
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction is performed when appropriate.
  • The procedure is performed by inserting small suction tubes through short incisions placed in inconspicuous locations near fat deposits. Once tube is in place, excess fat is removed.
  • Liposuction is performed.

Healing Process

  • The patient leaves surgery with a compression garment covering the treated areas. Compression is advised for about a month to reduce swelling and helps to achieve fast recovery.
  • Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Activity may be resumed in 3 to 4 days. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Bruising and swelling typically subsides in 2 to 4 weeks. The final result will be realized in 3 to 4 months.

Enhancement Options

  • Additional procedures that may enhance the result of a liposuction are tummy tuck, breast reduction, breast lift, breast enhancement, or a thigh-buttock lift.

Insurance Guidelines

  • Because this procedure is considered cosmetic, it is not covered by insurance and must be paid by patient.

Note: The specific risks and suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
