Natural Skin Fillers

Collagen, Restylane, Juvéderm™, Radiesse, Artefill and Sculptra®

There are two types of wrinkles: dynamic and static.

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle movement. Dynamic wrinkles appear when a muscle moves with a facial expression. This muscle movement can be reduced with Botox® treatments.

Static wrinkles occur at rest and are due to the aging process. As we age our skin loses collagen and hyaluronic acid and becomes thinner. Dermal fillers are an effective nonsurgical treatment to help reshape and rejuvenate the face by filling in sags and folds.

Collagen

Synthetic collagen called Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast is an appropriate treatment for treating fine lines. This product usually will last for 3 to 6 months depending on the patient. Results are seen immediately. The injections are usually very easily tolerated and require no anesthesia. There are no restrictions after treatment and synthetic collagen has no allergic potential.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is another component of human skin and it is also available as a filler. Hyaluronic acid plays an important role in the way your skin looks, feels, and functions. A natural complex sugar found in all mammals, it's a major component of the connective tissue matrix in the dermis—the dense, inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis. This matrix is made up of hyaluronic acid as well as two connective fibers—collagen and elastin.

Restylane and Juvéderm™

There are a number of brand names of Hyaluronic acid fillers including Hylaform, Captique, Restylane and Juvéderm™. These fillers generally will last from 6 to 12 months. Results are seen immediately.

Dr. Normington extensively uses Juvéderm and finds it is a very versatile filler, able to fill fine and deeper lines. It can also be used for volume correction such as in lip enhancement. Usually Hyalaronic acid fillers are injected with the help of anesthetic creams. There are no restrictions afterwards, and patients might be slightly red for a day or two.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a long acting liquid injectable filler made from calcium hydroxyapatite which is a component of bone and teeth. This filling material is best used for deeper lines or volume correction such as cheekbone enhancement. Radiesse is very long lasting, usually lasting for over a year. Radiesse does require the use on anesthetic creams, and patients are usually red for two days. The cosmetic results are visible immediately.

Sculptra®

The evolution of the wrinkle filler has led to an amazingly effective product called Sculptra®.  Sculptra® is not a wrinkle filler, it is a volumizer.  It replaces the natural volume (fat) loss that occurs as we age - the volume loss that is responsible for  the appearance of age.  An older face has lost the fullness of the cheeks, lips and around the mouth and fat loss under the eyes creates a hollow effect.  Where there used to be light, now there are shadows.  By replacing the volume loss, you reverse the creation of shadow and restore a youthful appearance.

Sculptra® which is often referred to as the "liquid facelift" is a revolutionary product that works by stimulating your body to produce new collagen and underlying tissue, which minimizes lines and wrinkles by replacing lost volume and contours to restore a fuller more youthful appearance.  Sculptra® achieves excellent results in treating all parts of the face including the areas around the eyes and lips, between the mouth and nose and throughout the cheeks and neck.

Artefill

Artefill is an innovative long lasting dermal filler.  What sets this product apart from other dermal fillers on the market today is that it is comprised of tiny collagen enhanced microspheres. The best feature of Artefill is its long lasting effect.  As with other fillers the collagen is absorbed by your body over time however the microspheres remain which provide your skin with added structure needed for long lasting wrinkle correction.  Studies show results can be seen for several years.  As with other collagen based fillers, a skin test must be completed prior to treatment to assure no allergic reactions will occur.
