Nose Reshaping

Candidates

  • Reshaping can improve the abnormal appearance of the nose resulting from birth defects, injury, or disease.
  • Individuals who are displeased with their nose and feel it is cosmetically unattractive are also candidates for nose reshaping.

Procedure Descriptions

  • Standard Rhinoplasty: Incisions are made inside the nostrils. Then, the nasal bones, cartilage, and soft tissues are reshaped to improve the external contour.
  • Open Rhinoplasty: Frequently used for difficult or larger noses, open rhinoplasty involves one external incision across the columella (the strut between the nostrils). Under direct vision, the bones, cartilage, and soft tissue are reshaped.
  • Tip-Plasty: When only the nasal tip is abnormal, it may be corrected with either a standard or open approach.
  • Using standard or open rhinoplasty, large nostrils may be reduced through tiny incisions at the outer base of the nostrils.
  • On an outpatient basis, the procedure is completed under sedation, and local or general anesthesia.

Insurance Guidelines

  • If completed for cosmetic reasons, this surgery is not covered by insurance. However, if the nasal deformity is due to a recent injury, insurance coverage may be available.

Intended Result

  • A more attractive nasal shape and/or a nose that is in better proportion to other facial features can be achieved with nose reshaping.

Healing Process

  • Patient goes home with an external cast or splint in place. The nose may be packed for 24 to 48 hours. The cast or splint is typically removed in 7 to 10 days.
  • Initial discomfort is easily controlled with medication.
  • Majority of swelling and bruising subsides progressively in 2 to 4 weeks.
  • If external sutures are used, they are removed in 4 to 6 days. Internal sutures dissolve.
  • Semifinal result is evident in 3 months. Final result is evident in 12 to 14 months, which is the time necessary for complete tissue softening.

Additional Enhancement

  • A chin enlargement is an additional procedure, which may enhance the result of nose reshaping.
  • To improve breathing, correction of a deviated septum may also be appropriate.
